Over the last 40 years, Carole Baillargeon has developed a rich hybrid practice in visual arts, with references to manual trades, craft and scenography. Related to contemporary textiles, her 2D works, sculptures and installations reflect her connection to the natural world and her interest in the shared humanity of our experiences. She is sensitive to the impermanent nature of life, the precarity of our environment, the transmission of heritage and hand skills, as well as the historical role of women in society.
Curated by José Niaison, four bodies of work have been brought together in this exhibition, offering an overview of her artistic considerations and technical approaches. Two series of works, one in 2D and the other in 3D, made of handmade paper; a large installation of felted stones and metal objects recalling our ancestral agricultural heritage; and a three-part series of transformed and expressive tools.
Rooted in a deep material and historical knowledge of fibres, textiles and clothing, her creations speak to the very personal as well as the universal.
